For all the hot dog lovers and amateur competitive eaters in the Brown County area, the first of several hot dog-eating contests will kick off at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Food Plaza #8, located at 1300 Early Blvd.

“It seemed like something fun to bring to town,” said Steve Fryar, president of Food Plaza. “The Nathan’s Coney Island contest is huge – why not bring something like that here?”

Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog eating contest is held at the Coney Island boardwalk restaurant. Joey Chestnut, from San Jose, Calif., holds the current record with 68 hot dogs and buns eaten in 10 minutes.

The contest is the newest addition to Food Plaza’s customer appreciation day activities that will be held at each location. During the appreciation day, residents can take advantage of deli and drink specials, which include 44-ounce fountain drinks for 47 cents, two breakfast sandwiches for $3, two Big Az hamburgers for $5 and much more.

“I invited residents to stop by any of the stores and check out our promotions,” Fryar said. “We have several food specials and giveaways for our customers”

Residents interested in competing in the contest will need to arrive at Food Plaza at 12:15 p.m. to register and the contest will start promptly at 12:30 p.m. The resident who eats the most hot dogs will receive a $50 Exxon customer card that can be used at any Exxon.

“The winner from Friday’s contest is more than welcome to compete at other locations,” Fryar said.

For nineteen years, Food Plaza has rewarded our local school children and teachers for their perfect attendance. All Brownwood and Victory Life Academy students and teachers, Pre-K through 8th grade, who have perfect attendance and have not been tardy this school year, received a 32oz mug and free refills at any locally owned Food Plaza store during the summer months.

Steve Fryar, President of Food Plaza said, “We are very excited with the high number of students and teachers that have received this award. There were over 275 teachers and students who will receive a 32oz mug this year. Several of the students and teachers win a mug every year. This is quite an achievement for these students and teachers who were there every day to learn and teach.

Fryar also said, “We believe that if we teach our children good habits, such as getting up and going to school every day, they will benefit from these habits now and in the future. You have to be in school to learn and the teachers must be there to teach.”

We would like to send a special thank you to the principals and teachers for the terrific job they do each day and for allowing us to continue this program with our schools.

Food Plaza owns and operates 8 convenience stores in Bangs, Brownwood, Comanche, Cross Plains, Early and Stephenville.
